Philadelphia Man Fails to Report to Prison
A 28-year-old Philadelphia man has been charged with failing to appear at the Bureau of Prisons to start his sentence. Warren Johnson, 28, was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 3, 2019, for failure to appear at the Bureau of Prisons for the commencement of his previously imposed sentence.
Johnson was sentenced to 78 months’ imprisonment on October 30, 2019, for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, including methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin. He had pleaded guilty to the charge and was on bail at the time of sentencing.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Johnson had asked the court for permission to surrender to prison on November 15, 2019, so that he could take an electricians’ exam. However, instead of reporting to prison as required, Johnson allegedly cut his electronic ankle bracelet monitor and was at large until his arrest by Philadelphia Police on November 23, 2019.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur is prosecuting the case.
Johnson’s indictment is the latest in a series of high-profile cases involving individuals who have fled the country or gone into hiding to avoid serving their sentences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has vowed to pursue these individuals to the fullest extent of the law.
Johnson faces a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine if convicted of the charges against him. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Johnson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. His next court appearance is scheduled for [insert date].
