Philadelphia Predator Eric Mooney Sentenced to Life for Child Exploitation

PHILADELPHIA – The grim headlines are true; Eric Mooney, a 42-year-old Philadelphia resident, has been sentenced to a staggering 40 years in federal prison for his heinous crimes against a child. United States Attorney David Metcalf made the chilling announcement this week.

In what reads like a horror story from another era, Mooney was charged with production and attempted production of child pornography, receipt, and possession of child pornography in February 2024. His guilty plea came earlier this year, and today’s sentence is a testament to the severity of his crimes.

The court filings reveal Mooney met his 14-year-old victim online in February 2023. He used manipulation and coercion to lure her into participating in sexually explicit conduct during live video chats. Within weeks, he convinced the girl to flee her Kentucky home at night, ultimately bringing her back to Philadelphia for more sinister acts.

Police uncovered a trove of evidence on Mooney’s devices, including explicit images and videos of the child. The 42-year-old also had a flyer advertising the missing child – proof that he was fully aware of his actions’ impact on the girl’s life. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative fighting the alarming rise in child exploitation over the internet.

United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section have been instrumental in this crackdown.
