A brazen Philadelphia thief is headed to federal prison for a daring armored truck heist that put lives at risk.
Tayion Spencer, 32, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for robbing an armored truck and stealing over $100,000 in cash. The Honorable Richard G. Andrews, U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, handed down the sentence.
According to court documents, Spencer wore his former employer’s uniform while committing the robbery, brandishing a firearm at the armored truck driver. A scuffle ensued, and Spencer tasered the driver, stole the driver’s firearm, and drove away in the armored truck.
After fleeing to Florida, Spencer was pursued by law enforcement and crashed into a marked police vehicle, leading to his arrest. Palm Beach Gardens Police recovered a loaded Glock semi-automatic handgun, a taser matching the one used during the Wilmington robbery, a ski mask, Spencer’s employment paperwork, and approximately $3,200.
U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss condemned Spencer’s actions, saying, ‘The defendant’s brazen robbery and reckless flight from law enforcement endangered the lives of innocent civilians. Thankfully, law enforcement stopped him before anyone was hurt.’
Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno of the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office added, ‘Tayion Spencer’s aggressive crime spree and attempt to avoid justice put anyone who happened to be around him at risk. This sentence holds him accountable for his dangerous and violent actions.’
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin P. Pierce, with the Delaware State Police and FBI’s Delaware Violent Crime and Safe Streets Task Force leading the investigation. The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department provided assistance.
