A drunk driving crash in Shiprock, New Mexico left a passenger with life-threatening injuries, and now the driver is facing up to 10 years in prison.
Philbert Mark, 46, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury after crashing his car on Navajo Route 13 on January 11, 2018.
Mark was driving while extremely intoxicated when he crashed, leaving his passenger with permanent and life-threatening serious bodily injuries.
According to court records, the passenger sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Mark’s guilty plea comes after a lengthy investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Mondragon is prosecuting the case, which has been a priority for U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison.
At sentencing, Mark faces up to 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release upon his release from prison.
