Phillip Taufa, Gun & Marijuana Trafficking, Utah 2023

ROOSEVELT, UT – Phillip Mahe Taufa, 41, is headed to federal prison for over five years after admitting to running an illegal gun and marijuana operation out of his Utah home. Taufa was sentenced Monday to 64 months, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $600 assessment. The case, investigated by the ATF and USPIS, reveals a brazen scheme to profit from the illicit flow of firearms and drugs.

Between February and November 2021, Taufa purchased over 50 firearms from both licensed dealers and private sellers in Utah. He wasn’t licensed to deal firearms, a critical violation of federal law. Taufa then flipped the guns, reselling them in California and Nevada at roughly double his initial cost. Court documents show he also lied to firearm dealers to secure the weapons, further compounding his offenses. This wasn’t a hobby; it was a calculated business designed to line his pockets.

The bust came on November 9, 2021, when agents executed a search warrant at Taufa’s Roosevelt residence. They didn’t just find guns. The haul included 43 firearms, ammunition, over 10 pounds of marijuana, and THC cartridges. Taufa confessed to intending to distribute the marijuana, admitting to daily use and sourcing the drugs from the dark web via U.S. mail. He was essentially running a one-stop shop for illegal goods, fueled by online marketplaces and a disregard for the law.

“As a result of the outstanding work and dedication of our law enforcement partners, the U.S. Attorney’s Office successfully prosecuted a case where guns and drugs were being unlawfully acquired and resold,” stated U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins for the District of Utah. “These activities adversely impact communities, both in our district and in neighboring districts.” While the statement touts success, the reality is Taufa’s operation thrived for nearly a year before being shut down.

The Roosevelt Police Department assisted in the investigation, highlighting the need for interagency cooperation in tackling these types of criminal enterprises. Assistant U.S. Attorney Victoria K. McFarland prosecuted the case, securing the 64-month sentence. This case was presented as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.

But PSN, and similar programs, often rely on reactive policing – catching criminals *after* they’ve already inflicted damage. Taufa’s operation is a stark reminder that the demand for illegal firearms and drugs continues to fuel criminal activity across state lines. While this sentence removes one player from the game, the underlying problems remain, and the pipeline of illegal weapons and narcotics will likely continue to flow until deeper systemic issues are addressed. The Denver Field Division of the ATF handled much of the investigative work.
