PHILADELPHIA – Kelvin Canales, a 29-year-old Philadelphia resident, was handed a 120-month prison term by United States District Judge Karen S. Marston for the illegal possession of a firearm used in a violent assault and armed robbery.
Canales’ crime spree began on April 21, 2021, when he robbed a victim of his cell phone before shooting the victim multiple times in the back as they fled the scene. The defendant’s flight ended with a single-car accident, where he abandoned his car and hid a loaded firearm in a trash can. Canales pleaded guilty to the felon in possession charge on November 29, 2023.
“Canales’ repeat offender status and violent history made him a threat to our community,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. “Today’s sentence keeps a dangerous man off the streets, reinforcing our dedication to keeping Philadelphia safe.”
Eric DeGree, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Philadelphia Field Division, highlighted the partnership with local law enforcement, emphasizing the commitment to justice and community safety.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The investigation was led by the ATF and the Philadelphia Police Department, with prosecution by Assistant United States Attorney Robert E. Eckert.
