Charles Piel, Child Sex Exploitation, Indiana 2023

INDIANAPOLIS – Charles Piel, 24, of Indianapolis, will spend the next four decades in federal prison after being sentenced for a horrific pattern of sexually exploiting children and distributing depraved content. Piel was sentenced to 40 years for creating and trafficking in images and videos of child sexual abuse, a case that exposed a calculated and disturbing abuse of vulnerable victims.

The investigation, which began in 2020, revealed Piel was actively sending and receiving child sexual abuse material online. This included sending explicit content to a minor in Florida in 2019. A deeper dive into Piel’s devices uncovered communications with another child in Michigan. Investigators discovered Piel traveled to Michigan in September 2020 and engaged in sexual conduct with the child, secretly recording the acts. He didn’t stop there; Piel continued to communicate with the victim, creating further sexually explicit recordings via video conferencing. All of this material was meticulously maintained by Piel until his arrest in October 2020.

This wasn’t Piel’s first brush with the law. This conviction comes on top of a disturbing history. In 2017, he was convicted in Hendricks County, Indiana, of Sexual Battery for abusing two minor boys, receiving only a term of probation. A year later, in 2018, while still on probation, Piel was convicted in Marion County of Possession of Child Pornography. He was placed on Community Corrections Home Detention, which he promptly violated, landing him in jail. Upon his release, he immediately resumed his predatory behavior, initiating the communications that led to this federal prosecution.

“Charles Piel is a habitual child predator who made a career out of sexually abusing and exploiting children,” stated U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers. “I commend the work of the investigators and prosecutors who have taken this child predator out of our community and helped to bring justice to his young victims. This case is yet another example of the outstanding work of Indiana’s nationally-renowned Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.”

Law enforcement officials highlighted the significance of this case within a broader context. The Southern District of Indiana was second in the nation in 2019 for the number of child exploitation cases prosecuted. IMPD Police Chief Randal Taylor declared, “The world is a safer place without Mr. Piel on the streets. No longer will he be able to prey on some our most innocent residents. Thank you to the men and women of IMPD who work day after day to keep our streets safe.” Eric K. Reed, Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service Indianapolis Field Office, emphasized the Secret Service’s commitment to investigating these crimes in partnership with other agencies.

The investigation was a joint effort by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Secret Service. Assistant United States Attorney Kristina M. Korobov, who prosecuted the case, secured a $20,000 restitution order against Piel and a life term of federal supervision following his release from prison. This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. Piel’s 40-year sentence sends a clear message: those who prey on children will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
