Assault Verdict Handed Down in Pine Ridge Case
A federal jury delivered a guilty verdict against 24-year-old William Clifford of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Simple Assault.
The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred on October 16, 2012, at Pine Ridge, where Clifford allegedly committed the crimes alongside co-defendant King Martinez, 23, of Wounded Knee.
Clifford and Martinez were initially indicted on October 23, 2012, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. While Martinez was acquitted of the charges, Clifford’s fate was decided by the jury on May 17, 2013.
The investigation into the case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Shattuck prosecuted the case, securing Clifford’s guilty verdict.
Clifford is currently being held in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing. The exact date of sentencing has not been disclosed.
The conviction is a stark reminder of the ongoing issues of violence and crime within the Pine Ridge community.
