A disturbing crime has shaken the Pine Ridge community as 19-year-old Kaleb Mills has pleaded guilty to Abusive Sexual Contact and Assault on a Federal Officer. The charges stem from two separate incidents that took place in Pine Ridge, South Dakota in 2012.
On April 1, 2012, Mills engaged in sexual contact with a woman who was not willing and repeatedly voiced her objection. She was in fear of being physically harmed by Mills. This heinous act carries a maximum penalty of 3 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
Just a few months later, on May 1, 2012, Mills bumped an Oglala Sioux Tribal Officer with his vehicle after the officer stopped him for speeding. This reckless act earned Mills a charge of Assault on a Federal Officer, which carries a maximum penalty of 1 year of imprisonment and/or a $100,000 fine.
The investigation for both cases was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Both cases were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced Mills’ guilty plea, which was accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on June 17, 2013. A presentence investigation has been ordered, and sentencing dates will be set.
The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing. The community is left to wonder about the severity of Mills’ crimes and the impact they have had on the victims.
