Pine Ridge Man Hits Cop with Car
A Pine Ridge, South Dakota man is accused of hitting an Oglala Sioux Tribe police officer with his car, leaving the officer severely injured. The alleged assault has put Kaleb Mills, 19, behind bars and facing a lengthy prison sentence.
According to court documents, Mills allegedly hit the officer with his vehicle on an unspecified date. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
The investigation into Mills’ alleged crime is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins is prosecuting the case.
Mills was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal after being indicted on February 20, 2013. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on February 25, 2013 and pled not guilty to the indictment.
The charges against Mills are merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. A trial date has not been set, leaving the fate of Mills’ freedom hanging in the balance.
As the investigation continues, the community is left wondering how such a violent act could occur. The alleged assault has sent shockwaves throughout the community, leaving many to question the safety of law enforcement officers.
