Alexander Winter, Assault, South Dakota 2013

The brutal assault of a Pine Ridge, South Dakota, woman in March 2013 has finally come to an end. Alexander Winter, 27, was sentenced to 1 year in custody for his role in the violent attack.

According to authorities, Winter repeatedly punched the victim in the chest and face during an argument, leaving her with severe injuries, including contusions, bruises, a bloody nose, a black eye, and a nasal fracture.

The assault occurred in March of 2013, and it’s a miracle the victim is alive to tell the tale. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.

Winter’s sentencing was handed down by U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on February 4, 2014. In addition to the 1 year in custody, Winter was also ordered to serve 1 year of supervised release and pay a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The U.S. Marshals Service will be taking Winter into custody. This is a harsh reminder of the consequences of violence and a testament to the bravery of the victim. We hope this conviction brings the victim some measure of closure and justice.

The people of Pine Ridge can rest a little easier knowing that Winter will be off the streets for the next year. However, it’s also a sobering reminder that there’s still much work to be done to protect the vulnerable members of our community.
