Assault with a Deadly Weapon Rocks Indian Country
A horrific knife attack unfolded on July 4 in Indian Country, leaving multiple victims with serious injuries. Valerie Arthur, a 35-year-old woman from Pinedale, New Mexico, has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country.
According to a criminal complaint, Arthur allegedly returned to a neighboring house armed with a knife after being asked to leave. She stabbed a victim in the neck and arm on the front porch and then pursued another victim inside the home, stabbing her in the neck, back, and face.
When the second victim’s 10-year-old son and eight-year-old daughter attempted to defend their mother, Arthur allegedly stabbed the children as well. All of the victims were taken to Gallup Indian Medical Center for treatment.
A complaint is only an allegation, and Arthur is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Novaline Wilson is prosecuting this case.
Arthur will remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for July 13.
The brutal attack has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many to wonder how such a violent incident could occur. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
