PITTSBURGH – Derek Hanner, a 28-year-old Pittsburgh resident, has been hit with four counts of armed bank robbery after he struck four Allegheny County banks, including two Citizens Banks and the Brentwood Bank, over a span of two months in late 2016 and early 2017.
According to authorities, Hanner’s spree began on December 27, 2016, with the first heist at a Citizens Bank branch. His last recorded attack was on January 14, 2017, at the Brentwood Bank location in Bethel Park. The suspect is alleged to have wielded a weapon during each of these incidents.
The federal grand jury indicted Hanner on April 11, charging him with four counts of bank robbery. Each count carries a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The ultimate sentence will depend on the severity of the offense and any prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin A. Loughran is leading the prosecution against Hanner. The investigation into these heists was a collaborative effort involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Pittsburgh Police Department, and the Bethel Park Police Department.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Hanner is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
