Michael Champion, Crack Cocaine Trafficking, Pennsylvania 2017

PITTSBURGH, PA – Michael Champion, 41, of Pittsburgh, is facing a potential life sentence after being indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession. The indictment, unsealed today, paints a picture of a hardened criminal allegedly peddling crack cocaine and armed to the teeth.

According to federal prosecutors, on April 14, 2017, Champion possessed with the intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base – commonly known as crack cocaine. This isn’t a simple possession charge; the indictment alleges a full-blown drug trafficking operation. But the danger didn’t stop there. Investigators say Champion was also packing serious heat: numerous firearms, including a dangerously modified sawed-off shotgun, allegedly used to protect his illicit business.

The charges are particularly damning given Champion’s criminal history. As a convicted felon, he is legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms. This isn’t a first offense, and federal authorities are treating it as such. U.S. Attorney Scott Brady’s office is making an example of Champion, sending a message to other criminals operating in the city.

If convicted on all counts, Champion could face a minimum of 25 years in prison and up to life. He’s also looking at a potential $1,000,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offenses and Champion’s prior record, according to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy M. Lanni is leading the prosecution.

This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made tackling rising violent crime a top priority, and the reinvigoration of PSN reflects that commitment. The program seeks to bring together all levels of law enforcement to make communities safer.

The investigation leading to Champion’s indictment was a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police – Narcotics and Vice Division. It’s a stark reminder that federal and local agencies are working together to dismantle criminal networks in Pittsburgh. Champion is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
