Abhijeet Das, 27, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is facing up to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography, a charge stemming from a digital stash of grotesque exploitation material police say he deliberately saved and accessed.
Das entered his plea on March 6 before U.S. District Judge Mark R. Hornak, admitting to one count of possession of material depicting the exploitation of a minor. The confession comes after a targeted investigation by the Western Pennsylvania Crimes Against Children Task Force, which uncovered evidence tied directly to Das’s electronic devices.
Court documents reveal that on November 8, 2017, Das was found in possession of computer files containing approximately 1,000 photographs and 380 videos showing minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Federal prosecutors say the material was not accidentally downloaded—it was actively collected and stored on his system.
Assistant United States Attorney Lee J. Karl is leading the prosecution, pushing for a sentence that reflects the severity of the crime. Judge Hornak has scheduled sentencing for July 19, 2018, at 9:30 a.m., where Das could face a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, the final punishment will hinge on the offense’s severity and any prior criminal history. For now, Das remains free on a $25,000 bond, a decision that has already drawn quiet criticism from child protection advocates monitoring the case.
The investigation was a coordinated effort by federal and regional task force agents trained to track down digital predators. Authorities say the case underscores the growing threat of online child exploitation and the need for constant vigilance in identifying and prosecuting those who traffic in such material.
