George Muzio, Jr., a 36-year-old man from Cohoes, New York, is facing federal charges for the production of child pornography, accused of sexually exploiting two children—one 11 years old, the other 13—during 2014 and 2015. The superseding indictment, handed down Friday, marks a significant escalation in a case that began with earlier charges tied to distribution and possession of illicit material.
U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Kevin M. Kelly, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations’ Buffalo Field Office, confirmed the charges. Muzio was arraigned in Albany and denied bail during a detention hearing before United States Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart, who ordered him held pending trial. Authorities stress the charges are accusations; Muzio is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The indictment alleges Muzio not only produced graphic material involving the two underage victims but also distributed and possessed child pornography—charges originally filed in February 2017. The case has been aggressively pursued under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to dismantle networks of child sexual exploitation and rescue victims.
If convicted on counts of production, Muzio faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison for each count. Distribution charges carry a sentence of 5 to 20 years per count. The court may impose a fine of up to $250,000 and is required to mandate a post-imprisonment supervised release term of at least 5 years—or for life, depending on the circumstances.
Prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph A. Giovannetti. The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which has played a central role in tracking digital evidence and building the case against Muzio. No additional suspects have been named at this time.
