SYRACUSE, NEW YORK — A 19-year-old St. Lawrence County man is behind bars on federal charges of transporting, receiving, and possessing child pornography. Tyler Hargrave of Massena was arrested at his home by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and New York State Police, authorities confirmed today.
Hargrave faces a mandatory minimum of 5 years and up to 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime of supervised release. He is also subject to mandatory registration as a sex offender if convicted. The charges stem from an indictment unsealed today in federal court in Syracuse, where Hargrave made his initial appearance and was ordered held without bail.
U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith, HSI Resident Agent in Charge Russell Linstad, and New York State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II jointly announced the arrest. Hargrave was taken into custody without incident and remains in federal detention pending a hearing scheduled for March 9, 2018.
According to prosecutors, the investigation involved digital evidence tied directly to Hargrave’s alleged possession and movement of child sexual abuse material. The case was built through a coordinated effort between HSI and the New York State Police, part of a broader crackdown on online child exploitation.
Assistant United States Attorney Sahar L. Amandolare is prosecuting the case. The multi-agency push reflects the framework of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to target individuals who exploit children via the internet, combining federal, state, and local law enforcement resources.
