William Lewis, Fentanyl Analogue Possession, Pennsylvania 2024

William Lewis, 30, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, admitted in federal court to possessing and intending to distribute over 10 grams of a deadly fentanyl analogue, sealing his fate with a guilty plea before Senior United States District Court Judge David S. Cercone. The charge, announced today by U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady, marks a major strike in the ongoing battle against synthetic opioids flooding the streets of Western Pennsylvania.

On August 5, 2017, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police raided Lewis’s residence in the city’s Oakland neighborhood, acting on a search warrant tied to narcotics activity. Inside the home, agents discovered a chilling stash: 56 grams of cyclopropyl fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid far more potent than heroin. The substance was packaged into 225 stamp bags emblazoned with the street brand ‘Ferrari,’ a name meant to lure users with a false sense of quality.

But the haul didn’t stop there. Investigators also uncovered 19 additional stamp bags containing pure fentanyl, along with a full suite of drug packaging paraphernalia—tools of the trade for those profiting off addiction. The presence of such quantities and branding indicates not casual use, but a deliberate operation designed to supply and expand the opioid epidemic tearing through communities.

Lewis now faces the full weight of federal sentencing law. Possession with intent to distribute 10 grams or more of a fentanyl analogue carries a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison, a maximum of 40 years, and fines up to $5,000,000. With no leniency built into the statute, Lewis’s future hinges on the severity assessed under federal guidelines and his prior criminal record.

Judge Cercone has set sentencing for October 9, 2019, and ordered Lewis held without bond until that date. Prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Shanicka L. Kennedy, who is pushing for accountability in a case emblematic of the deadly drug trade infiltrating urban centers.

The investigation was a joint effort by the Department of Homeland Security Investigations, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police—agencies working in tandem to dismantle distribution networks before more lives are lost. This case underscores the lethal evolution of the drug trade, where synthetic opioids like cyclopropyl fentanyl are not just replacing heroin—they’re accelerating the body count.
