Pittsburgh Man Sentenced for Exporting Guns to Haiti
A Pittsburgh resident has been held accountable for his role in a scheme to smuggle guns out of the country, violating federal export laws. United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan announced the conviction of Derby Clerfe, 44, who conspired to export firearms to Haiti without proper authorization.
Clerfe purchased nine handguns and handed them over to another individual, who arranged for their export to Haiti without filing the required export information. This reckless disregard for the law poses a significant risk to national security and public safety.
Derby Clerfe was sentenced to one year of probation and a $2,500 fine by United States District Judge William S. Stickman. Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey Bengel prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Export Enforcement’s New York Field Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. United States Attorney Olshan commended these agencies for their tireless work in bringing Clerfe to justice.
The successful prosecution of Clerfe serves as a reminder that exporting firearms without proper authorization will be met with swift and severe consequences. The federal government will continue to prioritize the enforcement of export laws to protect our national security and public safety.
