Pittsburgh Nurse Sentenced for Computer Fraud Scheme
A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania resident and former graduate nurse has been sentenced for his role in a brazen computer fraud scheme, putting a patient’s life at risk.
Kevin N. Ukaegbu, 31, of Pittsburgh, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison and three years supervised release for using a Highmark resident physician’s credentials to modify prescription medications for two patients at Allegheny General Hospital.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on December 5, 2022, Ukaegbu, who was employed as a graduate nurse at the hospital, used the physician’s credentials to access the hospital’s computer system. He then attempted to modify prescription medications for two patients, putting one of the patients at risk of serious bodily harm.
Totaling 24 months of hard time, Ukaegbu’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes. U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the maximum sentence under the guideline range, citing the seriousness of the offense.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, with the assistance of Highmark Health Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. U.S. Attorney Eric G. Olshan commended the investigative agencies for their work in bringing Ukaegbu to justice.
