PITTSBURGH – In a stunning turn of events, local tax preparer Jamar White has been handed a four-month prison sentence for his role in a massive scheme to file false and fraudulent income tax returns.
According to Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman, White pleaded guilty to charges covering the years 2010 through 2014. During this time frame, he prepared numerous false tax returns by inflating deductions for his clients, including fictitious gifts to charity and business expenses that never occurred.
The scheme was nothing short of brazen, with White securing refunds for clients who were not entitled to them. Judge Mark R. Hornak did not mince words in his sentencing, ordering White to pay $67,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and a special assessment of $500.
Once released from prison, White is also required to serve 12 months of Supervised Release. The investigation into White’s activities was led by the IRS Criminal Investigation division, which ultimately led to his indictment.
This sentence sends a clear message that tax fraud will not be tolerated in Pittsburgh or anywhere else across the United States.
