PITTSBURGH, PA – A federal jury has delivered a tough verdict in the grim saga of Deon Reese, finding the 47-year-old Pittsburgh man guilty of three counts of robbery, conspiracy, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. The verdict was announced by United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung.
Reese faced trial before United States District Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan for his alleged involvement in a March 23, 2017, botched drug-and-money heist that left a victim critically injured. Assistant United States Attorney Doug Maloney argued that Reese conspired with others to commit the robbery, and subsequent actions included soliciting bribes and attempting to thwart witness testimony.
According to the prosecution, Reese’s actions did not end with the violence of the crime; he went further by engaging in efforts to prevent his victim from testifying against him, including attempts to bribe the victim out of court appearances.
Judge Ranjan has scheduled sentencing for May 18, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. The defendant faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment, a fine of up to $750,000, or both. The final sentence will be determined by the severity of the offenses and any prior criminal history, as dictated by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Reese remains in detention pending sentencing. The investigation that led to Reese’s prosecution was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.
