Pizzeria Bandit Caught
A brazen string of pizzeria robberies in North Philadelphia has been linked to 26-year-old George Smith, who is now facing serious charges.
According to authorities, Smith robbed the Pizza Hut restaurant at 2916 N. Broad Street on August 20, 2015, and the Domino’s Pizza at 2628 N. Broad Street the very next day. The following day, August 24, 2015, Smith struck again, this time targeting the 7-Eleven at 2042 N. Broad Street.
Smith, a Philadelphia resident, is accused of carrying out the robberies under the Hobbs Act, which is a federal law that prohibits robbery affecting interstate commerce. If convicted of all charges, Smith faces a maximum possible sentence of 60 years in prison, a fine, up to three years of supervised release, and a $300 special assessment.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Philadelphia Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Arlene Fisk leading the prosecution.
An indictment from the United States Attorney’s Office charges Smith with Hobbs Act robberies and attempted Hobbs Act robbery.
The indictment will serve as a formal accusation against Smith, who is presumed innocent until proven guilty. A trial date has not yet been set.
The string of pizzeria robberies left the North Philadelphia community on edge, but authorities say they have finally caught the culprit.
