Kody William Konechne, Online Minor Enticement, South Dakota 2024

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell dropped a heavy hammer on Kody William Konechne, 23, of Plankinton, South Dakota, announcing a 10-year federal prison sentence for his despicable crime of Attempted Enticement of a Minor Using the Internet.

The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on June 5, 2024, also mandates five years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Konechne must register as a sex offender upon his release from federal prison.

Konechne’s descent into notoriety began in March 2023 when he was indicted by a federal grand jury. His plea of guilty on February 27, 2024, sealed his fate. The case revolves around an incident where Konechne, using Facebook, targeted a 14-year-old girl with the intent to coerce her into sexual activity.

But the girl was not a naive minor; she was an undercover agent. The sting operation led to Konechne’s arrest when he arrived at the prearranged meeting location. His sentence is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative aimed at tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The investigation into Konechne was a collaborative effort by Homeland Security Investigations – Sioux Falls, the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuted the case with vigor.

Konechne is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, facing a grim reality of his actions’ consequences. His sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severe penalties for those who would exploit children through cyber means.
