A federal jury in Coeur d’Alene has convicted a 37-year-old man of aggravated sexual abuse and sexual abuse.
Judge Wendy J. Olson announced that Jeremy J. Bohlman, of Plummer, Idaho, was found guilty of the two counts after a three-day trial.
The jury heard evidence that Bohlman used force or fear against a female to cause her to engage in sexual intercourse, contradicting his claim that the act was consensual.
After three hours of deliberation, the jury rejected Bohlman’s theory and found him guilty of both counts.
Bohlman has a prior conviction for sexual abuse of a minor and failure to register as a sex offender, both of which were tried in U.S. District Court due to his membership in a federally recognized Indian tribe.
U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson praised the jury’s verdict, saying it sends a clear message that sexual assault victims will be heard and believed. She also committed her office to working with federal and tribal law enforcement to provide justice for Native American women who are victims of sexual assault.
Bohlman faces up to life in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to a life term of supervised release.
Sentencing is set for December 7, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. before Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge at the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene.
The case was investigated by the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
