Christopher Franklin’s killers are finally facing justice, six years after his murder sent shockwaves through Ponchatoula. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced the arrests of Tony Johnson, Dkerian Thompson, and two unnamed juveniles in connection with the August 2016 homicide. Franklin was found dead under suspicious circumstances, triggering a prolonged investigation that spanned multiple parishes and law enforcement agencies.
The breakthrough came through an aggressive collaboration between the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI), Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ponchatoula Police Department, Hammond Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations. Task force efforts led to the identification and apprehension of all four suspects, ending a years-long manhunt marked by dead ends and mounting pressure from the victim’s family.
One suspect was already locked up in the Livingston Parish Detention Center when booked on the murder charge. The other three were processed as fugitives at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. All four are now en route to Tangipahoa Parish Prison, where they will face formal charges tied to Franklin’s death. Authorities have not yet released specifics on individual roles or potential motives.
“Our office is fortunate to have many experienced law enforcement agents skilled in investigating violent crimes,” said General Landry at a press briefing in Ponchatoula. “I appreciate all of our partner agencies who helped crack this case, and I am grateful for their dedication to public safety.”
Ponchatoula Chief Bry Layrisson credited Landry’s task force with turning the tide. “We are thankful for the support, leadership, and resources that General Landry has made available,” Layrisson said. “The apprehensions during this investigation are an example of the positive impact made when law enforcement from across Louisiana work together to solve violent crimes.”
Hammond Police Chief James Stewart emphasized interagency cooperation. “Anytime we can assist other agencies, we are happy to do it,” Stewart said. “In collaboration with state and local law enforcement agencies, we were able to help the victim’s family begin their closure process.” The case remains active as prosecutors prepare for arraignment.
