Man Indicted for DUI Manslaughter in Porcupine, South Dakota
A 25-year-old man from Porcupine, South Dakota has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after a deadly DUI crash.
According to court documents, Alden Brewer, Jr. was driving at a high rate of speed while under the influence when he caused an accident that killed two people on December 18, 2012.
Brewer was indicted by a federal grand jury and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on March 13, 2013, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 8 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. Brewer was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
The investigation into the crash is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Shattuck is prosecuting the case. Brewer is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
A trial date has not been set. The case is a sobering reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the devastating consequences that can result from such reckless behavior.
