PORTLAND, Maine
— A Portland man has been sentenced to 50 months in prison for conspiring to distribute cocaine, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
U.S. District Judge Jon D. Levy handed down the sentence to Tyler Vangel, 30, who pleaded guilty on October 31, 2023, to the charges. Vangel, also known by the aliases Tyler Linscott, Tyler Carter, and Andrew Flanagan, faces three years of supervised release after serving his prison term.
The investigation into Vangel began in early 2022 when law enforcement was looking into Sebastian Demers for suspected child exploitation. During the probe, authorities discovered that Demers was also selling drugs and that Vangel was his supplier. A separate inquiry into Vangel revealed that between January 2021 and June 2022, he regularly obtained and transported large quantities of cocaine from a Lawrence, Massachusetts-based supplier to be distributed by himself and others, including Demers, to customers in Maine.
According to court records, the evidence seized during the investigation included Vangel’s phone, which showed orders from lower-level distributors requesting a “basket” (3.5 grams) and “half key” (half kilogram), as well as Vangel responding about having a “brick” (kilogram) available for sale.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations. Vangel’s sentence comes as a result of his guilty plea and the evidence collected during the investigation.
While the investigation into Demers for child exploitation is ongoing, Vangel’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of participating in and facilitating illicit activities, including drug trafficking. As the investigation continues, it’s clear that Vangel’s actions had a significant impact on the community, and his sentence reflects the severity of his crimes.
