PORTLAND, MAINE — In a stunning blow to the drug trade in Maine, George Noonan, 51, of Portland, was handed a 15-year sentence yesterday for his role in a conspiracy to distribute and distribute cocaine. The U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed that Noonan faced an enhanced sentence due to this being his third felony drug trafficking conviction.
Court records paint a chilling picture of Noonan’s involvement, detailing how he and associates acquired over 1,200 grams of cocaine in Massachusetts and distributed it throughout the Portland area between early 2010 and June 2013. The sentencing comes after Noonan pleaded guilty on November 19, 2014.
Thomas E. Delahanty II, the United States Attorney for Maine, was quick to praise the efforts of the Southern Maine Gang Task Force in dismantling this criminal enterprise. The task force, which includes agents and officers from several federal agencies including the FBI, ATF, DEA, and ICE, as well as local police forces, played a crucial role in bringing Noonan to justice.
Assistant United States Attorney David B. Joyce, who handled the case, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, ‘This sentence sends a strong message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated in Maine, and those involved will face significant consequences.’
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency as well. The successful prosecution of Noonan underscores the importance of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies working together to combat drug trafficking.
