GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE – In a scathing blow to pandemic fraudsters, Chaz Ryan Watkins, 35, from Springfield, Louisiana, has pleaded guilty in federal court for wire fraud. The scheme involved siphoning over $95,000 in pandemic unemployment benefits.
According to U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Gathe, Jr., Watkins obtained personal identifying information of inmates and others to file fraudulent unemployment claims with the Louisiana Workforce Commission. His brazen theft exploited a vulnerable system designed to aid those in need during the crisis.
In an interview, Gathe declared, ‘Those who prey on pandemic relief funds will face severe penalties. We are grateful for our partners in this successful prosecution.’
Inspector General Joseph Cuffari echoed these sentiments, emphasizing, ‘Theft of federal pandemic funds is unacceptable. We will continue to protect taxpayer-funded programs.’
Louisiana Inspector General Stephen Street condemned Watkins’ actions, stating, ‘Watkins used emergency benefits for his own gain, defrauding legitimate recipients. His punishment is well-deserved.’
This investigation was a joint effort by the Louisiana Office of State Inspector General, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Assistant United States Attorney Kristen Lundin Craig prosecuted the case.
