Samael Mathieu, RICO Conspiracy, Massachusetts 2022

Boston’s streets feel a chill as Samael Mathieu, also known as ‘Hamma’ or ‘Hamma Thang,’ was sentenced to 114 months in federal prison yesterday for his involvement with the violent Boston street gang NOB.

Mathieu, a 26-year-old from Taunton, pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy and conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances back in April 2022. This comes as part of a sweeping federal investigation into the NOB gang that resulted in 31 total defendants being charged.

The Norton/Olney/Barry streets abbreviation doesn’t mask the gang’s reach. Court documents detail their involvement in murders, armed robberies, and sex trafficking, among other criminal activities. The investigation yielded a cache of contraband including 11 firearms, over one kilogram of fentanyl, and approximately $36,000 in cash.

Mathieu was a linchpin in the NOB’s operation as a key fentanyl trafficker. His October 2019 arrest at a residence used by him resulted in the seizure of drugs including fentanyl, pills, suboxone, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and two loaded handguns.

The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Crowley and Sarah Hoefle from the Organized Crime & Gang Unit. The announcement was made by a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the Boston Police, ATF, FBI, and local police departments. Mathieu’s sentence is another blow to the NOB gang’s operations, but law enforcement stresses that the fight against organized crime continues.
