BOSTON – Two Lynn gang members have been hit with heavy federal charges after pleading guilty to trafficking crack cocaine.
Jarmahl Sutson, known as ‘Mahl,’ and Nathaniel Freeman, also referred to as ‘Fatz,’ admitted their roles in the drug trade. Sutson’s guilty plea came on March 4, 2015, while Freeman’s admission was on Feb. 20, 2015.
Both men are set for sentencing, with Freeman facing his hearing on May 26, 2015, and Sutson’s scheduled for June 10, 2015. They were charged in the same indictment last August 2014.
Sutson confessed to distributing over 70 grams of cocaine base, while Freeman admitted to distributing more than 30 grams. Their sentences could include up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $1 million. However, federal sentencing guidelines typically result in less severe penalties.
Operation Whiplash, an investigation into local street gangs including Money Over Broken Bitches (MOBB), the Crips, and Deuce Boyz, has been pivotal in this case. The operation has led to charges against 47 gang members over the past two years, resulting in the seizure of more than 10 firearms and significant drug quantities.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the FBI, Massachusetts State Police, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, and local police departments. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy E. Moran and Peter K. Levitt are handling the prosecution for the United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz’s Organized Crime and Gang Unit.
