Brockton Kingpin Cardoso Faces Life Behind Bars
BOSTON – Kevin Cardoso, 26, of Brockton, the alleged head of a large-scale drug trafficking organization, has agreed to plead guilty to a slew of federal offenses, including gun and drug charges. The deal, struck yesterday, could land Cardoso a life sentence for flooding the streets with poison.
Cardoso admitted guilt to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, one count of possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of cocaine, over 400 grams of fentanyl, and over 500 grams of methamphetamine, and one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute the same quantities of those deadly drugs. U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns has scheduled sentencing for June 1, 2023, but will defer acceptance of the plea until that time. Cardoso was initially arrested in December 2021 and formally charged in January 2023.
Court documents paint a picture of a sophisticated operation distributing wholesale quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine throughout the Brockton area. Investigators tracked Cardoso’s movements using data from an ankle monitor he was already wearing on separate state gun charges – a cruel irony – and monitored his communications via Snapchat. This digital trail led them to multiple stash locations used by the DTO.
In October 2021, a raid on a Dedham stash location allegedly run by Cardoso yielded a terrifying haul: at least 2,000 grams of cocaine, 3,000 grams of fentanyl, 5,000 grams of methamphetamine, drug packaging materials, and a staggering $72,000 in cash. The location also contained equipment for pressing drugs, including a hydraulic press and various logos for branding. A subsequent search of Cardoso’s apartment uncovered a firearm, ammunition, 20 cellphones, over $26,000, an Audemars Piguet watch, and a diamond pendant with the number “39.”
At the time of his arrest, Cardoso had over $6,000 on his person and in his vehicle, along with three more cellphones. These phones contained communications allegedly detailing the supply and distribution networks of the DTO. The penalties are severe. The firearm charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The drug charges each carry a minimum of 10 years and potentially life in prison, along with substantial fines and supervised release.
The case was spearheaded by United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins, with assistance from the FBI, Massachusetts State Police, and multiple local police departments including Boston, Brockton, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, and Westport. This takedown sends a clear message: those who profit from poisoning our communities will face the full force of the law. The investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
