Giovanni Ortiz, Fentanyl and Cocaine Possession, New York 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Giovanni Ortiz, 31, of Buffalo, is staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence after a federal grand jury slapped him with multiple charges related to a major drug and gun operation. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced the indictment today, alleging Ortiz was running a fentanyl and cocaine distribution network right under the noses of Erie County residents.

The feds allege Ortiz wasn’t just dealing; he was armed. The indictment details charges of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, coupled with the serious charge of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. If convicted, Ortiz faces a mandatory minimum of five years in the slammer, but the potential maximum extends to a lifetime behind bars. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey E. Intravatola is prosecuting the case.

The investigation, launched in May 2024 by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, began to unravel Ortiz’s operation after a controlled purchase of fentanyl directly from the defendant. Investigators quickly discovered Ortiz wasn’t limiting his activities to a single location, utilizing multiple residences as hubs for his illicit business. This wasn’t a corner boy operation; this was organized.

On August 6, 2024, law enforcement descended upon residences linked to Ortiz on West Avenue, Rhode Island Street, and Jersey Street. The searches weren’t pretty. Investigators seized two loaded firearms, a cache of ammunition and magazines, and significant quantities of suspected crack cocaine and fentanyl. They also found $2,000 in cash and a variety of drug paraphernalia – the tools of a thriving, if deadly, trade. A further search of Ortiz’s vehicle turned up even more cocaine.

Erie County Sheriff John Garcia and HSI Special Agent-in-Charge Erin Keegan spearheaded the investigation, a clear demonstration of interagency cooperation to get this poison off the streets. The operation underscores the ongoing battle against the influx of deadly narcotics into Western New York, and the willingness of authorities to pursue those responsible, no matter how deeply entrenched they may be.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Ortiz is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the evidence presented thus far paints a grim picture, and Ortiz is now facing the serious consequences of allegedly flooding Buffalo’s streets with fentanyl and cocaine while armed to the teeth. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments.
