PROVIDENCE, RI – Another career criminal is facing federal time after a routine traffic stop turned up a stolen handgun and a mountain of ammunition. Troy L. Antley, 56, of Providence, pleaded guilty today to being a felon in possession of a firearm, adding yet another charge to a rap sheet that already includes state convictions for firearm offenses, robbery, and drug trafficking, as well as a 2013 federal firearm charge.
The bust went down on March 30, 2024, when a Providence Police officer pulled Antley over for a simple failure to signal a turn. Hardly a high-speed chase, but it quickly escalated. According to court documents, the officer spotted a knife on the driver’s seat, prompting a closer look. That’s when things got interesting – and dangerous. A round of 9mm ammunition was visible in the cupholder, and the unmistakable grip of a handgun was wedged between the driver’s seat and the center console.
The weapon recovered was a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol. It wasn’t just loaded; it was stolen – traced back to a theft in Alabama. Investigators found a high-capacity magazine containing 14 of 16 rounds, with one round already chambered and ready to fire. For a man already prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his extensive criminal history, this was a recipe for disaster. The question isn’t *if* Antley intended to use it, but *when*.
Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom’s office isn’t playing games. Antley, already familiar with the inside of a courtroom, is now staring down the barrel of another federal sentence. The exact length will be determined by a federal district judge on November 20, 2025, taking into account sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. Don’t expect leniency – this isn’t Antley’s first rodeo.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stacey A. Erickson and Milind M. Shah are prosecuting the case, ensuring that Antley pays for his disregard for the law. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the dedicated officers of the Providence Police Department. They’re the ones who put this piece of the puzzle together, and they deserve credit for getting another dangerous felon off the streets.
