CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – In a shocking display of law enforcement’s grip on the Mountain State, two local men have admitted to their roles in a methamphetamine distribution ring, complete with a cache of illicit firearms.
John Marshall Jones, III, 37, of Bridgeport, West Virginia, and David Allen Starkey, 36, of Flemington, West Virginia, both pleaded guilty in federal court to their respective charges.
Jones, a repeat offender, copped to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, a charge that could land him behind bars for up to 40 years. Starkey, meanwhile, admitted to the unlawful possession of a firearm – a serious offense, given his prior felony convictions in Barbour County, which prevent him from owning a gun.
According to court documents and testimony, officers were executing a warrant for Jones’ arrest when they stumbled upon the pair hiding in a home in Barbour County. What they found inside was a veritable arsenal, including an assault rifle, a handgun, and a significant stash of methamphetamine.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Mountain Region Drug Task Force, and the United States Marshals Service, marks a significant win for law enforcement in its ongoing battle against the scourge of methamphetamine in West Virginia.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner will now work with federal prosecutors to determine the fate of the two defendants, who will face sentencing by a federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of methamphetamine and the importance of community cooperation in keeping our streets safe.
