Christopher Porter, Mail Theft, New York 2021

A federal grand jury in Buffalo, New York, has indicted Christopher Porter, 37, of Angola, NY, on charges of stealing mail and delaying its delivery.

According to the indictment, Porter, a United States Postal Service employee, embezzled mail and stole gift cards included in the embezzled mail in October 2021 and January 2022. On six separate occasions in March 2022, Porter opened mail, delaying its delivery.

Porter’s charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz T. Wright is handling the case.

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced the indictment, stating that the investigation was a result of a probe by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Modafferi.

Porter was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy and released on conditions. The indictment is a result of an investigation that uncovered Porter’s alleged embezzlement and mail delay scheme.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and Porter is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The case is being closely monitored by the DOJ, with Wright handling the prosecution.

The indictment highlights the gravity of Porter’s actions, which not only compromised the trust of his colleagues but also potentially impacted the livelihoods of those who received delayed or stolen mail. As the investigation continues, Porter’s fate remains uncertain, leaving many to wonder what further evidence will come to light.
