Postal Worker Steals Over $300 in Gift Cards

A former U.S. postal employee has been sentenced for stealing over $300 worth of gift cards from greeting cards sent through various post offices in southern Illinois.

Casey L. Neal, 31, of Belle Rive, Illinois, was sentenced to 2 years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution to her victims. Neal pleaded guilty in October 2021 to theft of mail by a postal service employee.

According to investigators, Neal stole the gift cards while working as a substitute sales and distribution clerk at the Belle Rive, Dahlgren, and Macedonia post offices in January and February 2021. The stolen gift cards were valued at over $300 and included cards from retailers and restaurants such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Chik-fil-A, and Dairy Queen.

Neal used some of the gift cards to purchase money orders, which she used to pay her personal creditors.

The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Zoe J. Gross prosecuted the case.

The investigation revealed that Neal had stolen gift cards from multiple mail items, including those sent through the Belle Rive, Dahlgren, and Macedonia post offices.

Neal’s sentencing marks the end of a case that highlights the importance of postal service employees being held accountable for their actions. The U.S. Postal Service takes the theft of mail and gifts seriously and will continue to investigate and prosecute such cases to the fullest extent of the law.
