NEW YORK, NY – A jury in Manhattan federal court delivered a guilty verdict today in the case of Mario Powell, 34, of the Bronx, finding him responsible for a vicious attack on a federal corrections officer at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City. Powell, now facing decades behind bars, slashed the officer’s neck with a weapon fashioned from razor blades during an assault on May 30, 2020.
United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, didn’t mince words following the five-day trial before U.S. District Judge John P. Cronan. “Mario Powell brutally assaulted a federal corrections officer with a makeshift weapon made of razor blades,” Clayton stated. “Today, a jury of his peers held Powell accountable for this vicious attack. Prosecutors detailed how Powell managed to acquire and conceal the dangerous weapon within the prison walls. The evidence presented at trial painted a grim picture of a calculated assault. The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered lacerations to the neck, a testament to the severity of the attack. The MCC, already notorious for its challenging conditions, has seen a surge in inmate-on-staff violence in recent years, raising serious questions about security protocols.
Powell now faces a substantial prison sentence. He was convicted of one count of assault on a federal officer using a deadly or dangerous weapon, carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. He was also found guilty of possession of prison contraband, a charge that adds another five years to his potential sentence. While the judge ultimately determines the length of the sentence, the maximum exposure is a chilling 25 years. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 14, 2025.
