Probationer Convicted of Assaulting Feds
St. Louis, MO – In a disturbing display of violence, Philandias Samuel Calvin, 33, of St. Louis, has been convicted of assaulting federal officers at the Thomas F. Eagleton federal courthouse.
According to evidence presented during a two-day trial, Calvin became verbally combative when two United States Probation Officers and three Deputy United States Marshals informed him of his arrest warrants on December 6, 2017. The warrants had been issued due to Calvin’s continued violations of his federal supervised release, a condition of his sentence following his conviction for at least two separate federal crimes.
As the federal officials attempted to arrest Calvin, he punched one Deputy United States Marshal in the face and continued to resist, injuring two other federal officials.
U.S. Attorney Jeff Jensen praised the courage and efforts of the United States Marshal Service and United States Probation Office, stating, ‘The evidence showed these federal officers and professionals were injured in the course of their duties, which included trying to help the defendant through his court supervision. I am pleased the jury agreed and vindicated their efforts.’
Calvin faces up to eight years of imprisonment and a potential fine of $250,000 for his conviction. Sentencing has been set for December 20, 2018, before the Honorable Catherine D. Perry. The case was investigated by the United States Marshal Service with the assistance of the United States Probation Office.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day, and the importance of upholding the rule of law. Calvin’s conviction serves as a reminder that those who engage in violent behavior will be held accountable for their actions.
