PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The hard-knuckle streets of Providence witnessed a federal judge mete out justice on Monday when Juan Bautista Rosario-Sandoval, a 31-year-old thug from the city, was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for his brazen assault and robbery of a U.S. Postal Service carrier.
The sentence, announced by United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha, came after Rosario-Sandoval pleaded guilty to conspiracy to assault and rob the mail carrier, as well as conspiracy to possess more than 500 grams of cocaine. The plea was entered on December 23, 2023.
The court records revealed a chilling account of September 18, 2021, when Rosario-Sandoval and an accomplice targeted the unsuspecting mail carrier. They forced their way into the postal vehicle, initiating a violent confrontation that left the carrier with several injuries. The culprits made off with a Priority Mail Express Parcel before fleeing the scene.
Further evidence against Rosario-Sandoval showed his involvement in the illegal drug trade. He admitted to receiving numerous packages containing cocaine delivered via the U.S. Mail, totaling more than 500 grams of the hard drug.
Rosario-Sandoval, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, will face immigration proceedings after serving his federal sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ly Chin prosecuted the case, while United States Postal Inspection Service agents, with support from the Providence Police and Rhode Island State Police, conducted the investigation.
