Seattle – In a shocking turn of events, Shawn Stone, a 23-year-old resident of Puyallup, Washington, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for producing and possessing images of child sexual abuse. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.
Stone’s descent into infamy began when he was arrested at Sea-Tac airport in August 2022, upon his return from a family trip to Germany. At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones emphasized the long-lasting impact of child sexual abuse on its victims, stating, “The damage to young children doesn’t stop, it goes on a lifetime…. Their pain continues and their suffering continues.”
The FBI had identified Stone as an individual sharing explicit images on an online platform in the summer of 2022. Upon his arrest, Stone confessed to sexually molesting children during his trip to Germany in 2019, filming the abuse and disseminating the images. He also admitted acquiring and sharing images depicting the rape and torture of very young children. Stone pleaded guilty in January 2024.
Following his prison term, Stone will be under supervised release for an additional 25 years and is required to register as a sex offender. The amount of restitution he must pay to the victims depicted in the images is yet to be determined by Judge Jones, with more than 20 claims pending review.
The investigation into Stone’s actions was a collaborative effort involving the FBI, Washington State Patrol, Tacoma Police Department, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, and US Army. Assistant United States Attorney Matt Hampton prosecuted the case.
This conviction is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse via the Internet. For more information on Project Safe Childhood, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
