Quaymar Suggs, Murder, Connecticut 2021

Quaymar Suggs, 20, of New Haven, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in a violent street gang and the murder of an associate of a rival gang in May 2021. Suggs was found guilty of conspiracy to engage in a pattern of racketeering activity, including acts of violence, narcotics trafficking, and gun sales.

The investigation, led by the ATF, FBI, DEA, and New Haven Police Department, revealed that Suggs and other members of the Exit 8 gang engaged in drug trafficking, used and shared firearms, and committed at least three murders and 16 attempted murders since June 2018. Exit 8 members and associates also stole vehicles and used those stolen vehicles when committing acts of violence.

Suggs pleaded guilty to the charges on July 1, 2024, and admitted to shooting and killing an 18-year-old associate of a rival gang on May 19, 2021. He also admitted to breaking into a Connecticut state trooper’s car and stealing the trooper’s duty bag in 2021.

U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden handed down the 20-year sentence, which includes five years of supervised release after his imprisonment. Suggs has been detained since March 24, 2023.

The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn C. Kaoutzanis and is part of the Justice’s Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Project Longevity initiatives. These programs aim to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime. Project Longevity is a comprehensive initiative to reduce gun violence in Connecticut’s major cities.

Suggs’ sentence is a result of his involvement in the Exit 8 gang and the violence committed by its members. The investigation has been ongoing since June 2018, and several members have been charged and convicted of various crimes.
