On a fateful Sunday, Daniel T. Newcomb, a 30-year veteran of the Richmond and Danville Railroad, was stricken down with a severe case of congestion of the lungs. The 75-year-old Newcomb, a native of Charlotte County, was recuperating at his home on the outskirts of Manchester when his condition rapidly deteriorated. Just three days prior, his physician had declared him on the mend and expected him to leave his bed in no time. But yesterday, on April 20, 1901, Newcomb’s life slipped away quietly in his bed, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions.
