In a heart-wrenching tragedy, over 30 men were trapped in a burning mine in Port Royal, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1901. The Pittsburg Coal and Coke company’s shaft No. 2 had been on fire for seven years, but it was only in recent days that a massive explosion occurred, entombing the miners. The rescue party, composed of brave men who descended into the mine to save their fellow workers, has yet to return, leaving the crowd of onlookers entirely helpless.
