ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A bloody brawl on the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation ended in death, and now Nochise Martinez, 23, is facing the consequences. Martinez, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty today in federal court to voluntary manslaughter, admitting he stabbed a man to death during a fight.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2016, but the details remained sealed until today’s court proceedings. Martinez was initially arrested on January 4, 2017, following an investigation by the Gallup office of the FBI. The victim, also a Navajo man, sustained multiple stab wounds, proving fatal.
According to court documents, Martinez admitted to intentionally killing the victim by stabbing him in the chest with a knife. The fight, the specifics of which haven’t been publicly released, escalated quickly, leading to the deadly assault on the Ramah reservation in Cibola County.
Under the terms of a plea agreement hammered out between the prosecution and defense, Martinez is expected to receive a 48-month prison sentence. Following his incarceration, he will also be subject to a period of supervised release, the length of which will be determined by the court at a later date. He remains in federal custody awaiting sentencing.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Spindle is prosecuting the case, bringing federal charges in a jurisdiction where tribal and federal authorities often collaborate on investigations. The FBI’s involvement highlights the seriousness of the crime and the federal government’s commitment to addressing violence within Native American communities.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges facing the Navajo Nation and the devastating consequences of violence. While the plea offers a degree of closure, it doesn’t erase the loss of life and the pain inflicted upon the victim’s family. A sentencing hearing date has not yet been set, leaving the final chapter of this case unwritten.
