Ramone McBride, 20, Sentenced for Assault on Federal Officer in Kyle, South Dakota

On September 4, 2017, a vicious attack unfolded in Kyle, South Dakota, leaving a federal officer shaken and Ramone McBride facing the music.

According to court documents, McBride, then 20, jumped the officer from behind and assaulted him in the face multiple times with a closed fist. The assault continued when McBride grabbed the officer’s taser and deployed two taser cartridges, striking the officer in the temple, ear, neck, and bicep area.

The officer had responded to McBride’s address to remove him from the residence. Despite being informed that McBride was no longer present, the young man ambushed the officer, demonstrating a blatant disregard for authority.

McBride’s actions led to a federal jury trial in Rapid City on June 26, 2018, where he was found guilty of Assault on a Federal Officer. The verdict marked a significant moment in the case, bringing McBride one step closer to facing the consequences of his actions.

On October 3, 2018, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken sentenced McBride to 18 months in federal prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release. The court also ordered McBride to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen leading the prosecution efforts.

The sentence handed down to McBride serves as a reminder that assaulting a federal officer will not be tolerated. The brave men and women who serve in law enforcement deserve our respect and protection.
