JACKSON, MS – Randy Rodriquez Jones, 49, of Jackson, Mississippi, is headed to federal prison for seven years after being convicted of illegally possessing a firearm. Jones received the 84-month sentence today, a harsh penalty reflecting his repeated disregard for the law and a history of violent offenses.
Court documents reveal Jones sold a firearm to an individual on January 8, 2020, while already a prohibited person. He wasn’t just any prohibited person; Jones is a repeat offender with multiple prior felony drug convictions and a previous state conviction for – ironically – possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The feds don’t mess around with stacking charges like that.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated the case, building a solid case that led to Jones’s indictment by a federal grand jury on October 11, 2023. He attempted a defense, but ultimately pled guilty on January 30, 2024, recognizing the overwhelming evidence against him. It wasn’t enough to avoid a lengthy prison term.
U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson jointly announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen prosecuted the case, meticulously presenting the evidence and securing the conviction. This wasn’t some plea bargain; this was a straight-up conviction based on facts.
Federal officials say the case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. PSN emphasizes collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and community organizations. But at the end of the day, it’s about putting repeat offenders like Jones behind bars and keeping guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them.
Jones’s sentencing sends a clear message: in the Southern District of Mississippi, possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon will be met with the full force of federal law. The ATF’s New Orleans Field Division handled the investigation, highlighting their continued focus on gun crime in the region. This case is a reminder that even seemingly minor gun violations can lead to serious consequences, especially for those with a criminal past.
