Rapid City Man Charged in Government Theft

A 56-year-old man from Rosebud, South Dakota, has been accused of stealing more than $1,000 in overtime payments from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 2009.

Harold Compton, a former Deputy Superintendent, was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 18, 2014, for Theft of Government Property, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Compton appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on March 20, 2014, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

The investigation into the theft is being conducted by the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of the Interior. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride is prosecuting the case.

Compton was released on bond pending trial, but a trial date has not been set.

Compton is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the charge is merely an accusation. The investigation is ongoing, and further details may be released as the case unfolds.
