Rapid City Man Indicted for Assaulting Federal Officers
A Rapid City man has been accused of forcibly assaulting two federal law enforcement officers with a vehicle. According to court records, Alvin Chambers, 36, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 23, 2016, on two counts of Assaulting, Resisting, Opposing and Impeding a Federal Officer.
Chambers appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 29, 2016, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 20 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for each count. Restitution may also be ordered.
The alleged incident occurred on February 19, 2016, in Pierre, South Dakota, when Chambers used a vehicle to forcibly assault a Deputy U.S. Marshal and a Pierre Police Officer. The charge is merely an accusation and Chambers is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by numerous agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service, the S.D. Division of Criminal Investigation and the Pierre Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins is prosecuting the case.
Chambers was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The case is a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by federal law enforcement officers on a daily basis.
As the investigation continues, the community is left to wonder what led to this alleged act of violence. One thing is certain – justice will be served if Chambers is found guilty. The people of Rapid City and Pierre deserve to feel safe in their communities, and it’s up to our justice system to ensure that happens.
The indictment serves as a warning to those who would seek to harm our law enforcement officers. Assaulting a federal officer is a serious offense, and the consequences will be severe if convicted.
